Leipziger Messe Group of Companies Achieved Record Turnover in 2019

The Leipziger Messe Group of Companies generated a record turnover of almost EUR 100 million in 2019 - Approved hygiene concept for trade fairs and congresses - 70 events are scheduled to take place before the end of 2020

Together with its subsidiaries FAIRNET, fairgourmet, Leipziger Messe Guest Events, Leipziger Messe International and MaxicoM, the Leipziger Messe Group of Companies recorded its best results since the early 90s in 2019: Turnover of EUR 99.6 million marked a 12 per cent increase in consolidated turnover in comparison to the previous year (EUR 89.2 million in 2018) and a 14 per cent increase in comparison to the regular comparison year of 2017 (EUR 87.1 million). A new record was also set for the number of events held, with 280 in total (2017: 263) - 32 in-house trade fairs and 248 guest trade fairs, congresses and events in the Leipzig Exhibition Center, the Congress Center Leipzig, the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig and abroad. In total, in 2019 over 15,360 exhibitors (2017: 15,214) and approximately 1.2 million visitors were welcomed at locations throughout Germany and abroad. Every one of the Group's business units contributed to this success.

Martin Buhl-Wagner, Managing Director and Spokesman of Leipziger Messe: "With the record turnover generated in 2019, the Leipziger Messe Group of Companies has significantly improved its position as a driving force for the location and region: The Leipziger Messe events have a purchasing power of EUR 656 million and generate benefits for hotels, restaurants, exhibition stand builders, public transport, and taxi companies as well as thousands of jobs. This is precisely what our brand stands for, as signified by the famous double-M that was introduced over a century ago."

Markus Geisenberger, Managing Director of Leipziger Messe: "The impressive results highlight that the exhibitors are using and taking advantage of our comprehensive range of services. In 2019, we won the title of service champion from the national trade fair industry for the sixth time. The strategy we consistently follow is clearly working: active expansion of our trade fair portfolio, hosting new guest events, the ongoing digital transformation and constant modernisation and optimisation of the exhibition centre infrastructure."

2020: Approved Hygiene Concept

The positive business development continued into the first two months of 2020 with 84 events held during this period. This momentum came to an abrupt halt with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Leipziger Messe Group of Companies reacted in a prompt and cautious manner. Countermeasures were introduced to mitigate the financial implications of the pandemic. 194 events were either postponed or cancelled.

A hygiene concept was also promptly created to enable events to be held in compliance with all required protective measures. This was approved by the competent authorities in June. The Leipziger Messe group of companies is once again planning events starting immediately. 70 trade fairs and congresses are already being planned by the end of 2020.

Martin Buhl-Wagner: "Saxony made a very clear declaration: trade fairs are not considered large events. Our approved hygiene concept enables us to offer an attractive range of services for trade fairs and congresses. This consequently has given our exhibitors and partners a sense of planning security."

Markus Geisenberger: "Our plans are based on three key elements: maintaining safe distances, compliance with hygiene standards and contact tracing. We can provide 4 square metres of space per visitor, which is currently not offered at any other location. Our events are therefore not subject to any definitive participant limits, enabling exhibitors and customers to enjoy a high level of flexibility and exposure. It goes without saying that protecting the health of our participants and employees remains our top priority."
